Well, it’s September, about two and a half months after our very first estimated building completion date, and while we have done a lot of work in the background, there is still no building. SURPRISE!…
So, to cement the idea of letting go and letting God, and calling on a dressed-up version of the Serenity Prayer, I am having to publicly admit that, despite all of our best intentions, I am not actually in charge of the construction timeline.
Shocking, I know.
I also know that anyone who has done construction understands this, and I don’t know why I thought we would be different. I suppose I thought that the same resilience, grit, and stick-to-it-ness that make circus people chase the next trick, (after all, we regularly do things even when they hurt, even when we know we’re going to wake up the next day with a bruise) would somehow magically make the building happen on time….
Without the metaphor and storytelling, you’re probably wondering: Where are we now? When will I get to walk through the doors and choose which of the five bathrooms I would like to use? See the timeline graphic below!
And there is one more piece of this story that is actually good news: fundraising.
While I would certainly have preferred to be worrying about moving trucks by now, I am grateful that the delay has given our community more time to help us get across the finish line without adding another monthly payment to our budget. We are 79% of the way there, and that means the remaining 21% is no longer some enormous, abstract capital campaign goal. It is a very real, very achievable gap between where we are and opening the doors debt-free…

We aren’t Goldilocks, but we will get it “just right.”
Our move into the new Canopy Studio building has been delayed due to unexpected structural engineering revisions during the final rigging design process. As the project progressed from architectural drawings to structural engineering, the required support for our aerial rigging system was initially underestimated and then significantly overestimated. We are still working closely with our architects, engineers, and contractors to determine the appropriate structural requirements for each rigging point and to zone rigging points accordingly.
Rather than compromise the functionality of the space, we are taking the time to ensure the building is both safe and capable of supporting Canopy’s long-term programming. While this has extended our construction timeline, we remain committed to creating a facility that will serve our community for decades to come, and we look forward to sharing an updated opening timeline as soon as it is confirmed.

Demolition on the existing structure has begun! The sheet metal on the exterior is planned to be re-used at a farm. Demo should be completed in early March.
